DIAMOND BEACH
Jokulsarlon, Iceland
A large, crystal-clear chunk of ice sits in stark contrast to the black sand at sunset. These "diamonds" are the result of the receding Vatnajökull glacier, the largest in Europe, which breaks off enormous icebergs into the Jökulsárlón lagoon. These bergs float around for weeks, breaking down into much smaller pieces. Eventually, they are swept through a channel into the ocean and washed back up onto the beach. Many are polished and clear, with shapes as unique as fingerprints. Each one adds to the magic of this beach, making it one of the most special places in Iceland. The unofficial name, Diamond Beach, couldn't be more fitting.
