An ominous sunset hangs over the tide pools, adding drama to the turbulent, washing machine like lava rock drains in Hawaii. I spent a lot of time photographing these pools, watching as the water would rise from the surf and quickly fall into what seemed like a bottomless pit. At times, the rushing water would come in high and quickly and I’d find myself 50 feet from dry land, nervously wondering if a second wave would come in and completely take me out. I only had limited time to photograph here before catching a flight home and that time just happened to coincide with high tide. But when the sky started to light up with color like this, I knew risking my body and my camera gear was the only choice.
