Few places on Earth are as impressive as the ancient Inca city of Machu Picchu near Cusco. Built on a mountain ridge with massive stones, it is a marvel unlike anything I have ever seen with my own eyes. Listening to our guide describe the construction methods and the building effort had my head spinning in disbelief at what man can accomplish.
I had two opportunities to photograph this world of wonder: once in the afternoon and again the following morning. When we first arrived, the entire site was enveloped by clouds. Our private guide must have seen the disappointment on my face, as he told me upon arrival, "Do not worry, soon she will reveal herself." And he was right. Following along with our guide in the fog, I listened intently to what historians had pieced together (the Incas had no written language or records). And when the clouds began to break, just as our guide promised, I was able to peel away from the group to take the path to higher ground and reach this classic vantage point. With storm clouds and rain in the distance, a brief window in the sky let the sun shine through for just a few minutes, casting beautiful afternoon light upon the ruins. In that brief moment, the long journey to get here was all worth it.
