PUNCHBOWL GLOW
Columbia River Gorge, Oregon
Eagle Creek in the Columbia River Gorge is one of Oregon's most famous hiking trails. Punchbowl Falls is probably its most famous landmark. A beautiful watering hole, popular with swimmers in the summer, it's a great place to spend an afternoon admiring the waterfall. I photographed this in 2015, and several years later, a devastating wildfire that began on the Eagle Creek trail changed the landscape forever. Unfortunately, this vantage point no longer exists, as a huge chunk of the canyon wall collapsed into the creek, blocking this view. However, one can still access the falls, though with a bit more difficulty. I still look upon this image quite fondly as a memory of a day spent photographing waterfalls with a good friend. However, now it holds much more meaning: nature is fragile, and beauty can be fleeting. Enjoy it while you can, and do your best to protect nature at all costs.
