METLAKO IN THE MIST
Eagle Creek Trail | Columbia River Gorge, Oregon
I spent this morning with a good friend hiking on the Eagle Creek trail back in 2015. So much has changed since I took this image, and yet the forest is still just as beautiful. There was a small platform that I stood on to compose this photograph, but a year later a winter landslide took it out and sent it tumbling off the cliffside into the water below. Not long after that, the Eagle Creek fire started in September 2017 and devastated the entire trail, along with many other sights on the Oregon side of the Columbia River Gorge. This spurred a cycle of regrowth and rejuvenation in the understory, while at the same time infuriating many people over how the fire was started.
Looking back on this photo now, I think of the great day I had with my friend. I still remember how beautiful Metlako looked that morning. We managed to time it perfectly — though unplanned — to see the mist rising from this powerful drop just as the sun broke through the treetops. Adding a little warm glow to the natural framing of the falls. It also serves as a reminder that all life is fragile (not just human), and that beauty can be temporary. Enjoy every moment while it lasts, without taking it for granted. This exact view is gone forever, only to be seen in photographs now.
